On May 2 to 6, 2019, at the invitation of the research team on adaptive towns and social systems of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Australia, He Guangxi, researcher of the Institute of Science, Technology and Society, attended the International Symposium on the Impact Assessment of Disruptive Technologies. More than 50 scientific researchers and S&T policy researchers from China, Germany, Norway, the US, India and Australia participated in the meeting. Focusing on autopilot technology and synthetic biology, the conference discussed the possible social risks and impacts of new disruptive technologies, as well as the effective regulation of disruptive technologies through strengthening innovation governance and technology assessment (TA). At the meeting, He Guangxi and Zhao Yandong (Professor of Renmin University) introduced the response and attitude of the Chinese government, scientific community and public to the application of new technologies in the field of life sciences based on the cases of synthetic biology, and discussed the cultural differences of science and technology ethics and the problems and challenges China faces in the governance of science and technology ethics. After the meeting, He Guangxi met with researchers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization of Australia, and the University of Queensland and discussed the issue of further strengthening research cooperation in the future.
